A great walk in Grasmere that isn’t too hard but feels like a real achievement and has some lovely views. Wainwright used to do it before eating when he arrived into Grasmere late in the day but I think it’s worth spending a day over, along with some tea and gingerbread in Grasmere of course.
This mountain on top of Ilha Grande is fairly back breaking in the heat but the results are worth it. You follow the well marked T13 to the prison on the far side of the island until you find the turn off onto a rough but still regularly marked path. The forest stays close until right at the end when you emerge on to the ‘Parrot’s beak’ for stunning views of the whole island. Take lots of water.
Nice whole day walk along the Grand Union Canal starting in Tring with a few reasonable pubs for refreshments on the way. You can do it as a day trip from London by leaving from Euston and coming back to Leighton Buzzard. Buy a day return to Leighton Buzzard for a more reasonably priced ticket.
Useful tool for planning walks or cycles around the UK. It includes both Open Street Map styled for cycles, Ordinance Survey and Google Maps. It has a tool to allow you to draw a route and see distance and elevation data. Simple, straightforward and useful.
Beautiful all-day cliff-top walk along the Seven Sisters (a series of rippling cliffs) and Beachy Head. Get the train from London Victoria – buy a day return to Eastborne and a single from Lewes to Seaford to set off from Seaford at about 11 and get back to Eastbourne by about 6.
